10 Day Tanzania Calving Season Safari
If you are hoping to see all of the famous big five – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo – then this package is the perfect choice for you.
Overview
Experience one of the most moving spectacles in the animal kingdom — the Great Migration calving season — during this unforgettable 10-day safari across Tanzania’s world-famous northern circuit. This journey places you in the heart of the wild during a rare window of life, survival, and natural wonder. From the baobab-studded plains of Tarangire to the vast grasslands of Serengeti and the iconic bowl of Ngorongoro Crater, every step of this journey is rich with contrast, beauty, and adventure.
This itinerary is designed around the calving season, when nearly half a million wildebeest give birth over the course of just a few weeks. This extraordinary natural event takes place in the Ndutu region, where the flat, open plains provide the perfect birthing ground — and where the drama of life and death unfolds daily. Newborn calves attract an array of predators, creating unmatched opportunities for witnessing high-action game viewing and tender moments alike.
You’ll begin in Arusha, Tanzania’s safari hub, then move to Tarangire National Park, a place known for massive elephant populations and thriving birdlife. From there, you’ll pass through Karatu and the Ngorongoro highlands, entering the legendary Serengeti, where big cats and the first signs of the migration await. Next, you’ll head south to Ndutu, the calving heartland, spending two full days observing this once-in-a-lifetime wildlife event.
To complete the circuit, you’ll descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its unparalleled biodiversity, and visit Lake Manyara, a scenic park rich in birdlife and home to tree-climbing lions. Finally, return to Arusha for departure — or extend your journey to the turquoise waters of Zanzibar.
u’ll see families of elephants in Lake Manyara and Tarangire National park, dozens of lion packs prowling across the Serengeti and buffaloes more or less everywhere, but it takes a more skilled eye to spot the rarer rhino and leopards that make up the big five. Luckily for you our guides have just that! Despite there being only 16 rhinos left in the Ngorongoro crater and with leopards hunting mostly in the middle of the night, our knowledgeable safari drivers will do all they can to show you these magnificent animals in their natural habitat. And of course there’s so many other species to encounter and enjoy on your way!

FAQs
The Great Migration is the largest land-based wildlife migration on Earth, involving over 1.5 million wildebeest, 300,000 zebras, and thousands of gazelles as they move in a circular path through the Serengeti ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water. This incredible journey is filled with dramatic scenes of river crossings, predator hunts, calving, and long-distance movement—making it one of the most breathtaking wildlife spectacles in the world.
The migration is year-round, but the best time depends on what you want to see:
Dec–Mar (Calving Season): Southern Serengeti (Ndutu) – Wildebeest give birth; predator action is intense.
Apr–May (Green Season): Central Serengeti – Herds begin moving north.
Jun–July (Grumeti River Crossings): Western Serengeti – Smaller river crossings; good predator sightings.
Aug–Oct (Mara River Crossings): Northern Serengeti – Dramatic river crossings, crocodile attacks.
Nov: Herds return south toward Ndutu.
No. While wildebeest dominate the scene, the migration includes zebras, gazelles, and eland, as well as predators like lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, jackals, and vultures. It's an interconnected drama of prey and predators across the plains.
The migration is continuous and cyclical, with the herds covering 1,800+ km (1,100+ miles) each year. It’s a full-year phenomenon, not just a single event.
Ideally, 6–12 days allow for deep exploration, including time in Serengeti, Ndutu, and/or Ngorongoro Crater. This provides flexibility to track the herds and enjoy other parks along the way.
Yes! The migration can be part of a romantic honeymoon, family safari, or photography tour. It’s perfect for all ages, although kids under 6 may need custom arrangements.
While Kenya's Maasai Mara is part of the migration route, Tanzania hosts 80% of the migration—including calving season and longer durations of the herds' stay. Tanzania offers more diversity and larger wildlife populations over a longer period.
Yes. Popular combinations include:
Ngorongoro Crater
Tarangire National Park
Lake Manyara
Zanzibar beach extension
