Gombe National Park
Walk Among the Chimpanzees in Jane Goodall’s Legacy
Overview
Gombe National Park is a small yet extraordinary gem, famed for its rich history in primate research and its intimate chimpanzee encounters. Located on the shores of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania, this 52-square-kilometer park is where world-renowned primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall began her groundbreaking studies on wild chimpanzees in 1960. Today, Gombe remains one of the best places on Earth to observe these intelligent primates in their natural habitat.
The park’s dense tropical forests, misty ridges, and clear freshwater streams create a breathtaking setting for trekking. Guided hikes take visitors deep into the forest to track habituated chimpanzee families, where they can witness their social behaviors, grooming rituals, and playful interactions up close. Gombe is also home to other primates, including red colobus monkeys, olive baboons, and vervet monkeys, as well as a rich array of bird species.
Beyond primate encounters, visitors can enjoy the serene beauty of Lake Tanganyika, the world’s longest and second-deepest freshwater lake. The pristine waters offer excellent opportunities for snorkeling, kayaking, and relaxing on the shore after a day of trekking.
