Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route Trekking
Trek Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho Route — an 8-day scenic trail starting in remote rainforest and offering the best acclimatization, diverse landscapes, and high summit success. Ideal for adventure seekers and nature lovers looking for the ultimate Kilimanjaro experience.
Overview
The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful, remote, and well-balanced routes to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, offering an exceptional blend of scenic variety, wildlife encounters, and high success rates due to its excellent acclimatization profile. Starting on the western slopes of Kilimanjaro at the Londorossi Gate, the Lemosho trail begins in pristine, untouched rainforest, where trekkers often spot blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and exotic bird species. Unlike the busier trails, Lemosho offers solitude during the early days of the trek, gradually merging with the more popular Machame Route near the Shira Plateau. The full trek spans 7 to 8 days, making it one of the longest routes — a key advantage for acclimatization and increasing summit success rates. After passing through the rainforest, trekkers reach the dramatic Shira Ridge and Shira Plateau, a vast volcanic plain with sweeping views of Kibo Peak and Mount Meru in the distance. From there, the trail climbs to the Lava Tower for a critical acclimatization point at 4,600 meters before descending to Barranco Camp, nestled beneath the towering Barranco Wall. One of the most thrilling sections of the climb, the Barranco Wall offers a hands-on scramble with panoramic rewards, followed by continued ascents through the Karanga Valley and high alpine desert toward Barafu Base Camp. The final summit attempt begins around midnight, reaching Stella Point and then continuing to Uhuru Peak just in time for sunrise over the African plains. The descent follows the Mweka Route, offering trekkers a different exit path to experience even more of Kilimanjaro’s diverse terrain. Lemosho is a fully supported camping route, meaning trekkers are accompanied by experienced guides, porters, and cooks who set up tents, carry gear, and provide hearty meals. The pace is steady, the terrain varied, and the landscape ever-changing — from lush rainforest to barren volcanic ridges, from glacier views to golden valleys lit by the sun. This route is ideal for fit and determined hikers who seek a quieter, more immersive experience with ample time for altitude adjustment. It is especially recommended for photographers, nature enthusiasts, and anyone wishing to maximize their chances of reaching the summit while truly absorbing the majesty of Kilimanjaro in all its natural glory. Whether you’re a first-time climber or returning to Tanzania for a more complete trekking experience, the Lemosho Route delivers a breathtaking journey that captures the true essence of Kilimanjaro’s wilderness.
